El Dorado Zinnia (Zinnia elegans) We have been growing quite a few Zinnia varieties here on our farm in Nova Scotia, some are family heirlooms and a few have been sourced from other obscure locations. The El Dorado Zinnia dates back to the 1930’s. Our seed comes to us from a musician who also had an affinity for gardening on her rooftop patio. She grew flowers in every square inch of that outdoor space. The most striking double-flowered Zinnia caught my wife Kathy’s eye and the seeds were inevitably gifted over a cup of ginger tea with a Bruce Cockburn record playing in the background. Single stems produce a medium-large single flower of immense beauty that starts out green, eventually turning deep peach and then salmon-orange. They are an absolutely striking cut flower, and in your garden they are a magnet for bumble bees. The plants respond well to cutting, regrowing more flowers for you and the bees to enjoy.
