Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) The name “tansy” comes from the Greek word “athanasia,” which means “immortality.” Tansy was thought to confer immortality, so it was traditionally used for embalming. Also known as Cow Bitter or Golden Buttons, Tansy is a powerful plant that can naturalize very easily, so it should be planted in one area of your herb garden where it can be contained. Tansy can reach heights up to 4 feet, assuring the presence of its brilliantly tightly knit, button-like golden flowers. Tansy has an aromatic fragrance similar to that of a Rosemary-Chamomile blend. My great-grandmother planted tansy next to the back kitchen door to ward off insects and rodents from entering the house!

Planting Instructions:

Tansy requires a cold period of at least 4 weeks before seeding. Direct sow after the threat of frost has passed.  Broadcast seed on surface and lightly cover, allowing light to penetrate the seed directly. Soil should be kept moist. Seeds will germinate in 21-28 days.
