She told me that these were super squash seeds and that the vines would climb well into the clouds of summer (she was an eccentric, creative and highly imaginative student). Still, I had to know, and the following May of 2012, 80 of her gifted seeds were lined out in neatly marked mounds of silty loam. The verdict; extremely vigorous vines yielded a profusion of delightful yellow-tan skinned butternut squash. This was a classic ‘Walthams’ but so much more prolific and uniform with an average of 6 fruits per plant. I believe the vines might have actually grabbed a cloud or two if the growing season that year was a little more cooperative! These squash stored incredibly well (7 months+) and we certainly were able to select a fair number of plants for seed. Allow the fruits to ripen completely on the vine, then let them cure for 3-4 weeks.

95-110 days to maturity

20 seeds per packet

Planting Instructions: Seed indoors 1/2 inch deep. We are most certain it was the classic ‘Sugar Baby’ that she would have originally sown in the late 1960’s. This heirloom icebox type melon first appeared on the market back in 1959. The seeds have been in the family since that time. We have trialled and selected those super sweet black melons that great grandmother Nellie would have been proud to harvest and share with her family. Sugar Baby melon seeds produce watermelons that have a thin, hard rind with unique striping, becoming almost black at maturity. The flesh is firm and sweet, displaying an orange-red hue. The fruits are round and grow to about 7 inches in diameter on vines that can be grown on the ground or by using a trellis system. We have selected a few choice plants and are offering the seed from this heirloom variety of what we believe is ‘Victoria’ Rhubarb. This assumption and diagnostics confirmed after a most historically intriguing chat with a valley old-timer who was ‘purty darun sure’ that the rhubarb planted on our farm would have dated back to the 1870’s and furthermore, it could only be old Victoria at that time. Joseph Myatt introduced this variety in England in the 1830’s in honour of the Queen! ‘Long to reign over us’ indeed, this rhubarb has survived many decades here on the North Mountain of Nova Scotia, likely sown by the Bent family who homesteaded this farm in the late 1850's. This is a super sweet variety, therefore less sugar needs to be added in baking and cooking pies and cobblers. One of the most incredible family heirloom seed saves of all time. Discovered at the bottom of a trunk in Thunder Bay, Ontario by our Grandma Judy! These sweet peas had been in an envelope since 1912 with 100 or so viola flowers tied in small bundles with string, along with a few other seeds. The message written on the front: "first of season...Violets from my dear friend May... June 8th 1912" May was Judy's grandmother and it appears as if the envelope was gifted back to her at some point before she passed in the 1960's. May's husband Percy was a professional photographer in his lifetime and an avid horticulturist tending to his backyard oasis of flowers and fruit trees. We noted a few pictures of Percy standing beside his trellised peas and ornamentals! It is likely the seeds would have come from the Proudfoot gardens on Meryle Street in Thunder Bay.

The local cemetery would eventually encroach into Percy's former flower beds and garden plots, reinforcing the term "pushing daisies".

Upon opening the envelope, it was obvious that the viola seeds had since desiccated and were no longer viable. However, there were two other seeds sources inside. Several small dark grey seeds resembling buckshot. A very limited number of these germinated in the spring of 2021. We guarded them with our lives and they eventually sprouted into sweet peas. An incredible moment for us, noticing the emergence of each of the 7 sprouts in total! The power and energy of a seed is simply amazing!

The resulting flowers were even more astonishing. This sweet pea's bi-coloured blue and purple flowers are extremely fragrant. It is an early bloomer and an early finisher but so worthy. A stand out from a great distance, Percy Proudfoot sweet peas will climb 5-6 feet in their lifecycle. We think this is a very old Italian variety aka 'Sicilian Monk Peas' since they are so highly fragrant and early to bloom.

Extremely RARE - 20 seeds per packet

Growing Information: Starting indoors: Scarify seeds by nicking or filing a notch (pre-soaking for 2-3 hours in warm water or a weak solution of Chamomile tea may also increase germination %). - Sow 1/2" deep into cell flats or preferred deep-cell seedling container, 4-5 weeks before planting out. This is the case with Chester Reese, whom I unfortunately never had the pleasure of meeting before he passed away. Chester lived in Port George, Nova Scotia and was well known for his spectacular gardens of flowers and vegetables... a local arboretum of sorts that turned many heads as they passed through picturesque Cottage Cove, tightly aligned to the Bay of Fundy coastline. These Sweet Apple pepper seeds, along with a mysterious bush bean, were gifted to us from a former local resident now living in Red Deer, AB who claimed they were grown in Chester's gardens many years ago. Coincidentally enough, three days later, another local resident, Paul Moase of Margretsville, dropped into the farm to offer some Japanese Iris seeds he also collected from what was originally Chester's stock. Chester Reese Sweet Apple peppers are a heart-shaped chili pepper with a really nice sweet flavour. These have shown very good disease resistance. A prolific producer of pods containing 5-6, large blonde peas maturing around 85-90 days from sowing date.

40 seeds per packet

Planting Instructions: Sow seeds 1/2 - 1 inch deep, 2 inches apart in row during late spring or when soil temperature is at least 10-15 degrees Celsius.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2666/1736/products/image_21015c48-a4ab-409a-a5be-3989787fac06.heic?v=1660064132
prussian-blue
Prussian Blue Pea

Prussian Blue Pea (Pisum sativum) -This heirloom pea is well documented in Colonial literature of the early 1800’s with specific reference to the plantation at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. We were so incredibly excited to open up a box containing many glass vials of 70-87 year old seeds, ranging from flower seeds to old extinct tomato varieties like Chatham Select. The box of seeds were purchased at a barn auction in Manitoba by Heidi Berndt of Regina, SK. When Heidi saw our seed business featured on CBC’s Still Standing she decided that we might have a use for these treasures. One of the varieties we ran germination tests on was the Salpiglossis (Painted Tongue), which translates to ’Trumpet Tongue' in Greek. Salpiglossis is an annual heirloom flower that was introduced to North America in the early 1800’s. There were 3 vials of this seed with a tiny hand written paper note in each containing the label ’Salphaglosis' with the year, under the letterhead reading: 'Grandview, Manitoba'. The 3 vials ranged from 1935 to 1938 and amounted to approximately 2000 seeds. We tested around 50% from each vial with no success. We also froze the other half and refrigerated them for 2 weeks. These were also sown... and what a seed dance of a day it was on April 23 of 2022 when the first 19 seedlings emerged. Thirteen more also sprouted over the next week. In all, we guarded (and definitely over-nurtured) the lot of 32 plants until the time of transplant. Not to disappoint, by late May we were entertained by a wide array of beautiful shades of velvety 'Kodachrome’ flowers as pictured above. This could turn out to be the seed save of the century for us! We are calling this strain of Salpiglossis ‘Grandview Kodachrome’. Coincidentally, Kodachrome film was first introduced in 1935, likely around the same year as the vial of seeds were saved by the diligent seed saver of Grandview, MB. Out of interest, no seeds from any of the other vials are viable so far. More have been placed in the freezer for another try! We hope that you can enjoy these heirloom gems as we have been fortunate enough to, thanks to the preservation and generosity of Heidi!

100 seeds per package

Growing Information: Start seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost date.
