However, the Belgian Giant tomato certainly became quite popular in the Ohio and Pennsylvania regions during in the 1930s. It is thought that the seeds may have been brought to America by Mennonite settlers from Belgium. We have also found Canadian references to this tomato being grown in the 1950s via experimental agriculture farms in Southern Manitoba. Either way, this variety is cultivated mostly for its enormous size, low acidity, and delicious sweet flavour. The dark pink fruit easily top the scales over 2lbs (we've even had a few fruits weigh-in well over 4lbs). There are few seeds to be found in this large tomato, making it ideal for cooking and canning. This heavyweight has also made its way to our dinner table in many a sandwich over the last couple of years (one slice per sandwich!!).
