Canada Red Rhubarb - 'Chipman's' (Rheum rhabarbarum) This is a classic Canadian heirloom developed at the Morden Agricultural research station in Morden, MB. Rhubarb has the highest amount of vitamin C of all the vegetables and is thought to have more than 200 therapeutic properties as well as being a good source of dietary fibre. Outstanding deep red stalks harvested early each spring. This sweet variety is perfect for sauces and pies that require less sugar. Shows good heat-tolerance and is extremely cold hardy. Planting Instructions:
Start indoors in April, sowing seeds 3/4 - 1 inch deep and then transplant, spacing plants 36” apart. Pre-soaking seeds for 6-8 hours will help germination. Rhubarb can also be directly sown in mid-May where plants are to grow permanently. Optimal soil temperature is 16-25°C.
