Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) - A late summer blooming and hardy perennial to zone 3a. This species thrives in moist areas and makes a great option for planting near ponds, lakeshores, and low spots in your garden. We have a stand in our heavier clay-loam soils that has thrived. It prefers cool, moist conditions and does not tolerate drought at all, as a result, prolific blooming begins after the heat of summer until very late in the fall. Delicate blue flowers attract butterflies, honeybees, hummingbirds and make a wonderful finale to the growing season. Deer tend to not bother browsing this plant. The floral spikes also make a great cutflower.
