Big Baba Bull’s Blood Beet (Beta vulgaris) Say that 5 times real fast!! Somewhere in the 1960’s, my great grandmother aka Big Baba, selected the perfect Bull’s Blood beet, it was in her opinion, the only beet for Borscht soup and the best storing beet. No one disputed Big Baba’s claim, she would continue to grow only this variety for the next 20 years, treating many to exceptional Borscht dinners. These beets were still grown within the family farm until 2009 by successive generations of seed savers. With only a handful of seeds left, we managed to germinate 147 seeds in our 2014 Manitoba trials! Several of these beets were selected for their superior flavour and of course their great overwintering ability. What a save!!!!
