Yellow Sweet Hungarian Pepper (Capsicum annuum) - A small number of seeds were gifted to us in 2023 by a customer from Beamsville, Ontario who said these were grown by her family for over four generations. She believes it was her father's family, the Barta's, who likely brought them to Canada in the early 1900s. We had very low germination rates in the first year from the seed source but continued to grow the plants each successive year to finally arrive at a consistently healthy and vigorous plant population. This is a very interesting pepper with waxy yellow ghostly skin and a thick flesh. Picked at its immature stage, it has a very sweet flavour. When the colour changes to a light orange-red, they can have a fair bit of heat while still retaining the sweetness. An excellent pickler or simply slice raw to top dishes or mix in salads. A rare family heirloom!

Growing Information: Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before your last frost date. Sow ¼″ deep in a warm seed-starting mix and keep soil consistently moist and warm for best germination. Transplant seedlings into cell packs or small pots at the 1–2 leaf stage. Harden off plants for 4–5 days once frost risk has passed. Transplant outdoors in full sun when day and night temperatures remain consistently above 10 °C, spacing plants 18–24″ apart in well-drained soil.
