Asparagus Pea (Lotus tetragonolobus) An heirloom legume with a very interesting history of cultivation dating as far back as the 1400’s in regions of the mediterranean. Quite popular during the Victorian era, this highly aromatic species has uniquely winged pods born from bright red flowers. Initially sold by a Philadelphia based seed company in the 1830’s as the ‘Winged Pea’. Other seed catalogues of this period list the pea as a ornamental with edible sweet peas or as the 'Winged Lotus'.  This is low prostrate growing plant that can be grown in front of taller varieties or in planters and hanging pots. Pods are delicious at the young, 1 inch stage and make a wonderful addition to any stir-fry. They are also quite good as a steamed veggie! Historically, the pods were served as a garnish on fricasseed frog’s legs! Flower are also edible and highly ornamental in value. A fascinating and rare heirloom variety that is easily grown in vegetable and landscape gardens.
