Balsam Peppermint Stick Plant (Impatiens balsamina) This annual heirloom flower was once readily available in seed catalogues as early as the early 1800’s and used as a common planting in gardens during the Victorian age. Also known as Camellia or ’Touch-Me-Nots’ (not to be confused with Jewel Weed) these double blooms have spotted and striped ruffled flowers ranging from bright white to light reds, blooming throughout summer and well into October here in the Maritimes. Plants responded well to abundant moisture of 2023 and overall hot, humid conditions.

Growing Information: Sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. For earlier starts, sow seed 4-6 weeks early indoors. Light is required for germination so very light covering only. Seed germinates in 7-14 days at 21 C. Once germination occurs, grow under lights at a slightly cooler temperature before hardening off and transplanting to a sunny site in the garden. Space plants 12″ apart. Plants will respond well to 1-2 hours of shade in the heat of the afternoon.
