Abruzzo Pole Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) - These lovely pole bean seeds were sent to us from Rossana Morante of Etobicoke, Ontario. The beans were brought to Canada over 60 years ago from her family in Abruzzo, Italy. We grew these for the first time and were quite impressed with this species. A very tall growing pole bean reaching heights well over 7 feet. Pods are narrow, 6-8” and maturing to a darkly striped midnight purple. This bean also has a highly ornamental value with its attractive prominent dark pink-mauve flowers. Pods are very flavourful, especially if picked at early stage of growth. Similar in growth habit and texture to our Norwegian Pole variety Hoj Prinsesse, but Abruzzo is more of a vigorous climbing strain with a more slender pod. Seeds are very “Italian’ or French looking. We asked for identification assistance from a few of our European heirloom seed enthusiasts, who all agree it is likely of Northern Italian origins. We have collectively only come across one other similar variety referred to as Emilia’s Italian Pole Bean which was grown in the Vancouver area for over 100 years, initially brought to Canada by Emilia Fulla in 1911 from the Udine region of Northern Italy. Emilia’s variety is also known as Auntie Vi's Italian Pole’. Perhaps Rosanna’s ‘Abruzzo’ is of similar lineage? VERY RARE! LIMITED QUANTITIES for 2024! Please save your seeds!
