Chester Reese Horticultural Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) Another heirloom seed source from the gardens of the late Chester Reese of Port George NS.  This is a pre-1800 type of Italian Horticultural drying bean that produces many thick, flat, oval, red striped tan pods averaging around 6 inches in length. Plants are quite compact and dwarf-like, reaching no more than 18 inches in height. When immature, the pods make nice snap beans, but the primary use is as a drying bean.  Cooked, they have an nice creamy texture with a bit of a nutty taste making then great in many dishes. They are considered semi-runners that can withstand colder climates very well.  We have noted these to mature earlier and evenly more so than other Horticultural beans.
