Simonet Sweet Corn (Zea mays) - An heirloom sweet corn developed by Robert Simonet of Edmonton, Alberta. Simonet immigrated to Edmonton from Paris, France in 1919 with his sister, who had married a Canadian soldier. After several years working as an engineer, he rented land near 83rd Avenue and became a market gardener, eventually purchasing 5 acres in King Edward Park. There he developed over 100 varieties of flowers and vegetables in his lifetime, most notably double-flowered petunias and hollyhocks. Today, his Simonet Sweet Corn remains a favourite among gardeners for its sweet, flavourful golden cobs.
