Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium purpureum) Joe Pye Weed is a late-blooming, herbaceous, perennial. It is a wildflower and an herb that was used by Mohican herbalist, Joseph Pye, as a remedy to lower fevers and treating typhus outbreaks as early as the mid 1700’s. The purple-pink flowers are composed of 5 to 8 florets and bracts giving the appearance of large clusters. Some plants are known to give off a vanilla-like scent making them additionally attractive to butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.

Planting Instructions: Requires cold stratification before seeding. (4-5 weeks of refrigeration.) Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Broadcast seed on top of soil and lightly cover with dome or plastic film until emergence. Seeds can be sown outdoors in the late fall to satisfy cold period required for spring germination.
