Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) A very popular hardy perennial dating back to the 1400's where it is said to have been a favourite of King Charles V. This variety of lemon balm is much more strongly lemon scented than any other lemon balm we have grown! Leaves are highly flavourful and especially fragrant. We grow our Lemon Balm in hanging pots and raised bed planters because of its creeping habit. Many customers plant it as a ground cover and use the dried leaves as a calming and soothing tea. Summer flowers are creamy white and attractive to pollinators. Plants reach 12-16 inches in height and spread to 24-32 inches wide.

Seeds can also be directly sown outdoors two weeks after last spring frost. Remove seed heads to keep plant from self seeding. Prefers well-drained soils, however, leaves tend to be more aromatic in poor soil. Seeds can be sown outdoors in the late fall to enhance spring germination.
