Black Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) This is an old-fashioned single blooming classic, towering in flower gardens for centuries, including at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Impressive black-chocolate/burgundy coloured flowers grow on slender stems. John Parkinson described Black Hollyhock as early as 1629 as being "of a dark red like black blood". Hollyhock is a biennial, or at best, a weak perennial that will flower in its second year.

Planting InstructionsStart seeds 6-8 weeks before last frost date, sowing in cell pack on surface and slightly covering with soil. Keep under bright light. Germinates in 7-10 days. Transplant seedlings 18-36 inches apart in well-drained soils trying not to disturb the roots. Do not crowd plants, they require good air circulation. Seeds can be sown outdoors in the late fall to enhance spring germination.
