Ox-Eye Sunflower (False Sunflower) (Heliopsis helianthoides) I have always known these as the 'Garbage Dump Flowers' simply because my parents collected seeds in the early 80's from a beautiful clump growing in an old garbage dump near High Bluff, Manitoba. Ox-eye Sunflower, aka 'False' or 'Smooth Sunflower', is a common naturalized perennial in the Aster family easily identified by its small yellow sunflower-like heads. The central disk is yellow and cone-shaped unlike true sunflowers (Helianthus sp.). Often found in wild spaces in poorly drained clay soils or dry gravel-sand moraines. It is a very attractive garden perennial, reaching heights of 4-5 ft and blooming profusely well into late fall. Visited by a wide range of pollinators and highly sought after as a seed source for birds. We have continued to grow this strain in the 'Revival' family since 1983!
