Alpine Columbine (Aquilegia alpina) - A stunning variation of Common Columbine. Native to the Swiss Alps, this variety features nodding bell-shaped, double violet-blue flowers. Plants grow 18-24” tall. One of the first perennial flowers on our farm to show dense flowers in the late spring-early summer. Must be planted in well drained soils but can tolerate some partial shade. A good choice for larger outdoor pots and containers. Columbine adapts well to urban pollution and marginal soil types.

Growing Information: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost date. Cold stratification is recommended for best germination; refrigerate seeds for 4–5 weeks before sowing, or direct sow outdoors in late fall to allow natural winter chilling. Surface sow seeds and lightly press into soil, as light can improve germination, and cover only lightly with fine soil or vermiculite if needed. Keep soil evenly moist until emergence. Germination is typically slow and variable. Transplant seedlings once established and after the risk of frost has passed. Plant in full sun to partial shade in cool, well-drained soil. Space plants 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) apart.
