Canadian Columbine

Canadian Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) Known as a woodland wildflower of the eastern North America or Eastern Red Columbine. The genus name Aquilegia comes from the Latin ‘aquila’ which refers to an eagle, where the pedals resemble an eagle's talons. This is an erect, branching perennial, up to 24 inches tall and well-known for its showy flowers. A nodding, red and yellow flower with upward spurred petals alternating with spreading, colored sepals and numerous yellow stamens hanging below the petals. Very attractive nectar source for hummingbirds. It is also believed that Aboriginal peoples crushed the flowers, rubbing the nectar on their wrists as a love charm! The compound leaves are also very unique in their lobing.

Planting Instructions: Requires cold stratification before seeding. (4-5 weeks of refrigeration.) Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Broadcast seed on top of soil and lightly cover with dome or plastic film until emergence.
