Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) - A native plant species of the Mediterranean region known as a herb cultivated for its essential oils. It is often called the 'Clear Eye Plant' since the seeds can be soaked to make a solution that was traditionally used to remove foreign particles lodged in the eyes. In most regions of Canada, this species is considered a biennial, flowering in its second year, however, it can be considered a soft perennial in zone 6b and up. We have seen the plants survive for multiple seasons in zone 5 of the Maritimes. Ken selected the initial seed source from a stand of plants near Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. Plants have very large leaves and send a tall lavender-blue flowering spike in year two. Flowers are highly fragrant and visible for pollinators. Plants will require room for 2 feet of width. Expect heights with flower ranging from 30-40”. To enjoy extended daily blooms provide a location of at least 6 hours of full sun. Avoid prolonged wet soils as root rot can be an issue. Seeds can be slow to germinate, but be patient, it is well worth the wait!
Requires cold stratification and darkness to germinate.
