Ox-Eye Sunflower (False Sunflower) (Heliopsis helianthoides) I have always know these as the 'Garbage Dump Flowers' simply because my parents collected seeds in the early 80's from a beautiful clump growing in an old garbage dump near High Bluff, Manitoba. Ox-eye Sunflower, aka False or Smooth Sunflower is a common naturalized perennial in the Aster easily identified by its small yellow sunflower-like heads. The central disk is yellow and cone-shaped unlike true sunflowers (Helianthus sp.). Often found in wild spaces in poorly drained clay soils or dry gravel-sand moraines. It is a very attractive garden perennial, reaching heights of 4-5 ft and blooming profusely well into late fall. Visited by a wide range of pollinators and highly sought after as a seed source for birds. We have continued to grow this strain in the 'Revival' family since 1983!

Planting Instructions: Requires cold stratification before seeding. (4-5 weeks of refrigeration.) Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Broadcast seed on top of soil and lightly cover with dome or plastic film until emergence. Can also be sown directly in late fall. Seeds can be sown outdoors in the late fall to satisfy cold period required for spring germination.
