Common Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) - I bet your grandmother had a go-to supply of Common Chives within 20–30 steps of the kitchen, mine certainly did! With a mild onion flavour, this easy-to-grow perennial is a must for any culinary garden. Snip the long, thin leaves to enhance salads, potatoes, soups, meats, and Mexican dishes. Start seeds early indoors, or sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. One of our chive blocks sits year-round in a large 4 × 12-foot raised planter next to the house, and they are always among the first greens to emerge in spring.
