Henbane (Hyosycamus niger) - Henbane is an unusual biennial plant in the Nightshade family, notable for its soft, sticky hairs and striking buff-yellow flowers that emit a strong, distinctive scent. Stems are rigid, about 1 inch thick, and plants typically grow 3–4 feet tall, occasionally reaching up to 5 feet. The plant produces capsule fruits with a prominent cover, completing its dramatic structure. Historically, Henbane has been used in traditional herbal medicine for its sedative, antispasmodic, and analgesic properties. It contains alkaloids such as hyoscyamine and scopolamine, which were used to treat ailments including pain, inflammation, and respiratory issues. Caution: All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested and should be handled responsibly.

Planting Instructions: Henbane require light to germinate. They can be sown outdoors in late spring after the danger of frost, or surface-sown in late fall for natural cold stratification over winter. If sowing in spring, refrigerate seeds for 4–6 weeks before planting to improve germination. Scatter seeds lightly on the soil surface and gently press them in without covering. Keep soil consistently moist and in bright light until germination, which typically occurs in 5–10 days. Transplant seedlings or thin plants to 18–24 inches apart to allow full growth. Henbane prefers sunny locations with well-drained soil. Minimal maintenance is required once established; avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
