Italiko Rosso Dandelion (Cichorium intybus) - Italiko Rosso is a striking chicory variety known for its vibrant red stems and midribs, which add a brilliant splash of colour to salads and other dishes. The deeply lobed leaves carry the classic bitter dandelion-like flavour. This perennial plant is exceptionally cold hardy, our stands thrive year-round exposed to the elements on the North Mountain of Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. Slight variation in plant habit, leaf shape, and colour is normal.

Growing Information: Italiko Rosso can be planted as soon as the soil can be worked in spring. This cool-weather crop grows best at temperatures of 15–18°C. While direct seeding is possible, transplants are recommended for best results. Sow seeds in ¾-inch plug trays, barely covering them with soil, 3–4 weeks before transplanting outdoors. To harden off, shade seedlings on warm, sunny days and gradually reduce water and temperature for a few days before planting. Our transplants have survived temperatures as low as -5°C. For a continual harvest, seeds can be resown every 3–4 weeks.
