Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) Lemon Balm is a popular, hardy perennial with a long history dating back to the 1400s, when it was said to be a favourite of King Charles V. This variety is particularly aromatic, with leaves that are intensely lemon-scented and highly flavourful. We grow our Lemon Balm in hanging pots and raised bed planters due to its creeping habit. Many gardeners also use it as a ground cover, and the dried leaves make a calming, soothing tea. Summer brings creamy white flowers that attract pollinators. Plants reach 12–16 inches in height and spread 24–32 inches wide.

Planting Instruction: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before transplanting. Sow on the soil surface and cover lightly. Transplant outdoors after the last frost in late spring, or direct sow seeds outdoors two weeks after the final frost. Remove flower heads to prevent excessive self-seeding. Lemon Balm prefers well-drained soil, though leaves tend to be more aromatic in poorer soils. Seeds can also be sown outdoors in late fall to encourage spring germination.
