Lovage (Levisticum officinale) - Lovage is a towering perennial herb that will quickly become a standout in your garden, especially when in bloom. A member of the Apiaceae family, it is related to carrots and other umbellifers. This impressive plant can grow 6–8 feet in a single season, producing large, aromatic leaves that add a celery-like flavour to salads, soups, and broths. Some gardeners also grow Lovage for its edible roots, while its attractive yellow-green flowers draw a wide range of beneficial and predatory insects. The seeds from the flowers can be harvested and used as a fennel-like spice. Lovage thrives in full sun or partial shade and should be spaced 2–3 feet apart in its permanent location. We often keep a few plants close to the kitchen door for easy harvest!

Planting Instruction: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before transplanting. Sow no deeper than ¼ inch in a well-draining soil mix, maintaining a soil temperature around 15°C. Germination typically occurs in 10–15 days. Seeds can also be sown outdoors in late fall to encourage spring germination. Transplant seedlings to their permanent location once they are strong enough, allowing 2–3 feet between plants for optimal growth.
