Wood Germander (Teucrium scorodonia) A very popular plant in Scotland, used in herbal teas, also known as Garlic Sage or Wood Sage. Germander is a perennial species that grows into a 2-3 foot bush, forming yellow flower spikes, highly sought after by honey bees. Germander tea has been used traditionally as a tonic to fight cold and flu-like symptoms. Plants will tolerate poor soils and gravely hillsides. Apple orchardist have traditionally planted Wood Germander inbetween rows to lure in pollinators. Plants responded very well through our 2025 drought season.

Planting Instructions: Sow seeds on the surface or lightly cover, as they need light to germinate. Start indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or direct sow in spring. Transplant or thin to 12–18" apart in full sun to partial shade. Prefers well-drained soil and is drought tolerant once established. Trim lightly to encourage bushy growth.

  • Sunlight: Prefers partial to full shade. Will tolerate some sun but thrives best in shaded conditions.

  • Soil: Grows best in well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil but is adaptable to other soil types as long as drainage is good.

  • Watering: Water regularly during the growing season, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Wood Germander is drought-tolerant once established and does not like waterlogged conditions.

  • Planting: Plant in spring after the last frost or start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Space plants 12-18 inches apart to allow for natural spreading.

  • Maintenance: Trim back dead or damaged growth in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh, new growth. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage more blooms throughout the growing season.

  • Containers: Works well in containers with proper drainage. Ensure the container is large enough to allow the plant’s natural spreading habit. Use well-draining potting mix and water moderately.
