Connie's Oriental Poppy (Papavera orientale) This treasure comes to us from the farm of Connie & Irving Fredericks located near Chipman Brook, NS. Connie has stated that the poppies have been growing beside the driveway since she can remember, never failing to please with powerful blooms each spring! This strain has very large and slightly wrinkled or fluted petals that are deep orange and one of the earliest Oriental bloomers we know of in the region. Oriental poppies grow best in Zones 3 to 6, thriving where summers are relatively cool. Perhaps this is why Connie’s have flourished so well nearby the cool mountain breezes off the Bay of Fundy. Their existence is shorter where heat and humidity are prolonged. They also hate wet feet so planting them in raised beds or lighter soils is a good idea. Expect deep, fiery-orange flowers in spring to early summer. Plants are clump forming and stems and leaves are coarse and hairy. When they begin to disappear in the summer, you can plant another species beside Oriental Poppies that will fill the void, such as Coneflower, Daisies or Asters. Flowers are popular as a cutting if picked just as the buds begin to open up. A very rare and beautiful strain exclusive to our Revival family.
