Grandmother’s Garden Columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris) Also called Granny's Bonnet, this species is native to Europe and was a common plant in cottage gardens of the mid 1800’s. In many cases it escaped the confines of such smaller gardens and naturalized in neighbouring meadows. The Grandmother’s Garden Group refers to short-spurred, clump-forming columbines with large, nodding, old fashioned flowers. Blooms are typically pink, burgundy, purple and white. This old-fashioned perennial will graciously poke out of any flower bed, and grows 24-36” tall.
