Mikado California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) Mikado California Poppy seeds were first offered in the early 1930’s by at least half a dozen seed companies. Indigenous peoples of the south western plains of NA had cultivated the poppies for years using them as an anti-inflammatory means to treat toothache pain. Plants average 16 inches in height and have deep forest green stems and leaves, giving way to gorgeous four-petalled, deep burnt-orange flowers. California poppies are more pronounced on sunny days but will open part way even on the cloudy, gloomiest days. They are an ideal choice for mass plantings and in establishing meadow blocks. Plants will provide a long lasting supply of pollen through the late fall. Dead-heading will encourage continued blooms.
