New York Aster (Aster novi-belgii) A native species to much of North America, New York asters tend to be shorter plants with thin stems and smooth leaves vs their New England cousins! New York asters also bloom approximately 10 -14 days later which is why they are also known as Michaelmas daisy, lighting up roadsides and meadows around September 29, St. Michael’s Day. Classified as nova-belgii, meaning 'New Belgium’ referring to the colonization of Dutch settlers in New York State during the 1700’s. Blooms tend to typically exhibit shades of blue, pink and white.
