Mandan Tobacco (Nicotiana quadrivalvis) – A compact, bushy annual herb traditionally used as a ceremonial plant by Indigenous peoples of North America, particularly the Mandan. Native to the western United States, it thrives across a wide range of soils and climates. Plants grow up to 24” tall and produce clusters of 1–2” tubular flowers in shades of white, green, and pale purple. Historical records note that seeds were collected during the Lewis and Clark Expedition and given to Thomas Jefferson, who grew them at Monticello, describing the species as “a singular species, uncommonly weak and probably suitable for segars.” Drought-tolerant and easy to grow, Mandan Tobacco is suitable for short-season gardens.
