Purple de Milpa Tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa) This is a popular Mexican heirloom species, traditionally used in salsa’s. Purple de Milpa is an excellent storing tomatillo that turns purple when fully ripe. We agree with the grandchildren that the purple types are sweeter than green tomatillos. Papery husks enclose the fruit and must be removed before cooking. A very prolific producer!

(65-70 days from transplant)

30 seeds per packet

Start indoors 4-5 weeks before transplanting out.

Growing Instructions: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, sowing ¼ inch deep. Transplant to full sun after danger of frost has passed, spacing plants 18–24" apart. Tomatillos need at least two plants for proper pollination. Grow in rich, well-drained soil. Harvest when the papery husks fill and begin to split.

  • Sunlight: Full sun (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day) to ensure vigorous growth and fruit production.

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, loamy soil rich in organic matter. It thrives in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0).

  • Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Purple Tomatillos are drought-tolerant once established, but consistent moisture will support better yields.

  • Planting: Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost or direct sow outdoors once temperatures warm up (above 50°F/10°C). Space plants 24-36 inches apart to allow for their spreading habit.

  • Maintenance: Support with stakes or cages as the plants grow to keep the heavy fruit off the ground. Remove spent flowers and fruit to encourage new growth. Prune occasionally to maintain shape and improve airflow.

  • Containers: Can be grown in large containers with good drainage. Use well-draining potting mix and ensure the container allows room for the plant’s roots and spreading branches.
