Haczkiewicz (Ukrainian) Hollyhock (Alcea rugosa) A very old heirloom brought to Canada from the western Ukraine/Poland border in the late 1890’s by Jon and Catherine Haczkiewicz. These stunning hollyhocks were grown on their original farm in Vidir, MB, an Icelandic/Ukrainian mixed village just north of Arborg. The family later settled on better soils near St Andrews along the Red River, but continued to grow this Hollyhock. The seeds were saved by successive generations from the plants of Vidir according to family member Mary Antonachuck of Red Deer, Alberta, who gifted us some precious seeds in 2023. The flowers are single and deep rose-burgundy, blooming later than most other Alcea sp. It is possible to see some lighter red shades. Please save your seeds from this one if you are only growing one hollyhock.  VERY RARE!
