Dead Viking Pea (Pisum sativum) Another historic find gifted to us from our customer Gus of Oslo Norway. This is a Graert (greypea) from Norway resembling later field peas that were a common food staple in northern Europe for many centuries. This is the same pea as found in Viking graves (800 AD)!! Very few varieties have survived in Scandinavia, and we are extremely fortunate to have acquired these seeds which have performed extremely well in our Maritime climate of Nova Scotia. This is a tall growing pea (4-5') with small pods similar in size to that of Dwarf Grey Sugar peas. The pods have a distinct coloured rib and have a light purple hue before drying. Six - eight deeply purple-grey to black coloured peas with green speckling, in a typical pod. Makes a great soup pea! VERY RARE!
