Great Depression Hot Pepper (Capsicum annuum) Initially intended to be used as an  ornamental pepper as a border in flower beds and in containers. Seed origins are rooted back to the 1930’s where Jane Kirksey originally grew these in her flower gardens. Bushy little plants produce a heavy canopy of dark-purple leaves and small one inch conical peppers, ripening from purple to orange and finally to a dark burgundy-red. Peppers are born upright on plants. Flavour is somewhat bitter but they are often used in hot sauces and salsa. During the Great Depression, these peppers substituted as a pickling variety and in pepper jellies.
