Dwarf Grey Sugar Pea (Pisum sativum) Dwarf Grey Sugar snow pea seeds produce very early edible dwarf pods. We had these seeds passed through our Thunder Bay family members several years ago. They had been sitting in a sealed milk bottle with a tag labeled “Dwarf Sugar Snow Pea”. The peas were in the basement for several years since they were last grown in the Fort William gardens of George Artist. George was an old time Horse & Buggy Milkman who loved gardening. His gardens were exhibits for all to see, especially his family. My wife notes…”Grandpa George had every square inch of his property planted in something ...there were secret pathways over wooden boards that led to a different edible treasure”. He was particularly meticulous with his rotation and trials of peas and beans. We have grown them for many years between Manitoba and Nova Scotia. These Dwarf Grey Sugar peas have responded very well in both climates. They are prolific, bushy plants that only grow to 24 inches in height and do not require staking. They are sturdy plants with very attractive sweet pea-like flowers that lead to clusters of flat, semi-pointed, curved, light green 3 inch pods. The pods are easy to pick, since most are at the top section of the plant. We suspect George ordered his seed in the 1960’s from Vesey’s since there was a 1963 Arthur Vesey Catalogue in the gardening shed. Interesting Note* This old heirloom variety was listed once as Dwarf Grey Sugar Cabbage Pea, and has been in production since before 1773.
