Sluis en Groot Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) In 1952, the Dutch Seed Co. Sluis en Gruit crossed 'Bloomsdale Dark Green' and 'Viking' to produce a slow to-bolt variety called 'American Long Standing'  aka America Spinach. Plants reach about eight-ten inches in height and yield thick, dark-green leaves that are quite tolerant of heat and drought. We grow this species in our greenhouse throughout the year!  'America' spinach is a long-standing variety, suitable for canning, freezing, and of course, eaten fresh. A fabulous heirloom that is ideal for succession planting.

Planting instructions: Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1 inch apart, thinning to 2-3 inches apart after germination. Leave 12-18 inches between rows. Begin seeding when soil temperature is 7-10 degrees Celsius. Spinach can be sown as soon as ground is ready since it is a cool season crop. Spinach can also be sown again in late summer as a fall crop.
