Wonderberry (Solanum retroflexumIn the early 20th century, Luther Burbank crossed Solanum villosum and S. guineense, calling it Wonderberry. Also referred to as Sunberry, this is a shrub-like plant that produces clusters of small, dark purple 1cm fruits that are quite tasty, particularly when cooked. Mature plants can reach 36 inches and resemble small woody shrubs. A very drought tolerant species with fruit that can be cooked to make very good jam, jelly and preserves. This is a Nightshade family species therefore fruits should NOT be consumed green as they contain toxic alkaloids! Note* Seeds can be slow to germinate, but improved when seed flats are kept moist.

Planting Instructions: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/8 inch deep and keep soil warm & moist. Transplant into 1 inch cells or 2 inch pots at 1-2 leaf stage. Harden off plants for 4-5 days after risk of frost has passed, then transplant outdoors. Plants should be spaced 30 in. apart.
