Red Fig (Solanum lycopersicum) This heirloom tomato is shaped like a fig or pear and is believed to have been in circulation since the early 1700's. Gardeners traditionally dried this tomato and used it as a substitute for figs in winter storage. A prolific producer of red pear-shaped fruits, having a delicate, sweet flavour. They make great snacks for kids lunches and are ideal in salads or with roasted vegetables. Semi-determinate growth producing slightly compact plants.

Planting Instructions: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/4 inch deep and keep soil warm. Transplant into 1 inch cells or 2 inch pots at 1-2 leaf stage. Staking tomatoes (indeterminate) should be transplanted into 3-4 inch pots. Harden off plants for 4-5 days after risk of frost has passed, then transport outdoors.
