Rutger’s Original Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) - An outstanding heirloom strain predating the 1943 Rutgers University release. This original selection traces back to the 1928 Campbell’s Soup Co. breeding program, developed from a cross between Marglobe (1917) and JTD (New Jersey, 1922). Bred for uniformity, rich colour, and strong flavour, Rutgers quickly became one of the most important processing and home garden tomatoes of its time. Medium-sized oblate fruits are smooth and strikingly red inside and out, with excellent texture and classic, full-bodied tomato flavour. A dependable choice for slicing, cooking, and especially canning.
