Schanzenfeld Mennonite Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) This beautiful dark tomato comes to us from Darlingford Manitoba. Similar in colour and taste to the Black Crimean, but more juicy like the Paul Robeson. Also, this is the earliest dark-skinned variety we have grown (70 days). This tomato was sourced from a Mennonite lady of Schanzenfeld, MB who claims the seeds are of Dutch origin but were initially brought to Canada from her German ancestors over 100 years ago. Dave Lumgair of Darlingford acquired the seeds and has shared them with many folks in the Pembina Valley region of Manitoba. Emil and Elsie Byrka collected seeds in 2019 and gifted to us therafter. Indeterminate plants that are heavy producers of medium-large fruits. LIMITED QUANTITIES for 2024!

Planting Instructions: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Sow 1/4 inch deep and keep soil warm. Transplant into 1 inch cells or 2 inch pots at 1-2 leaf stage. Staking tomatoes (indeterminate) should be transplanted into 3-4 inch pots. Harden off plants for 4-5 days after risk of frost has passed. Transplant outdoors once day and night temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees Celsius.
