Black Romanian Fava Bean (Vicia faba) Seeds gifted to Ken at a Seedy Saturday in Annapolis Royal, NS from Michael and Audrey Smyth who were visiting family in the area during 2023. They were labeled as Heritage Romanian Broad Beans passed down from family ancestors of Audrey’s side of the family who immigrated to Quebec sometime in the late 1940’s. We started with 26 seeds and have grown these for two years with very good success, now finally able to offer a population for resale. These Black Romanian fava beans are a very deep purple broad bean, likely related to the Russian and Baltic varieties. Three foot tall plants produce light purple seeds if eaten fresh, eventually drying to black when dry. The plants are quite productive and long lasting.
