Borlotti Pole Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) This is an old Italian heirloom bean also known as 'Borlotto' or Cranberry Bean. The original beans are thought to have been widely cultivate in the Columbia region before making their way to North America via Italian immigration. Borlotti were bred to have a thicker skin, and are very popular throughout the Mediterranean region. Plants are strong & sturdy climbers, easily reaching over 5 feet in height. These prolific plants produce masses of 6 inch pods by late summer, containing firm, cream coloured, maroon streaked beans. The beans are creamy in texture, with a wonderful nutty flavour.
