Martoc Fava Bean (Vicia faba) A French heirloom broad bean named after the English  village of Martock in Somerset.  Records of cultivation exist from the medieval period and were grown extensively in greater England throughout  the Middle Ages. The Martock was first mentioned in parish records as early as the 12th century, used in a Roman voting system as a ‘No’ vote  vs a white bean as a ‘Yes’. Smaller 2” beans turn almost black when fully dried or after a time in storage.  A very attractive plant with lovely maroon mottled flowers. In medieval times Martock beans were usually dried to be used in soups, stews and corn or rice gruels. A truly ancient and prolific variety worth growing and saving your own seeds from! Can tolerate clay soils.
