Pretzel Cowpea Bean (Vigna unguiculata) Also known as The Pretzel Bean or Rams Horn Bean, this is infact a cowpea species. Early seed availability dates back to W. Atlee Burpee catalogues of the mid 1890’s where it was marketed as a commercial variety under the name of ‘Rams Horn Bean’.  Plants grow very tall and do require trellising. Beautiful lavender flowers emerge in mid summer giving way to curly pods resembling traditional rounded pretzels. Pods can be shelled and cooked like black-eyed peas when green or harvested as dry peas. Popular as a dried pod in floral arrangements.
