Red Seeded Citron Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) This is an extremely ancient melon variety that has been grown for centuries and traditionally used to make preserves, pickles, and "sweetmeats." Sometimes referred to as the Colorado Preserving Melon, Citron melons actually originated from the Nile River Valley of Africa and were referenced in Biblical manuscripts. It was later brought to North America by European colonists and African slaves during the late 1500's. The rigid white flesh is not eaten raw but rather, used to make sweetmeats which are candied melon rind, used in fruitcakes and other deserts. Makes a great marmalade too! Please see our Citron preserves recipes in this product's photo section. These recipes were kindly sent us from Yvonne Taylor of Ontario. These were her mother's original recipe's copied from a Church cook book located in Dundas, Ontario.
