Arbuznyi Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) - A rare Russian heirloom tomato variety whose name means "like a watermelon”, most likely because of the distinctive green stripes that appear on the fruit before it begins to ripen. This is a thin skinned, medium-sized beefsteak falling into the black tomato category. The flavour of Arbuznyi is quite distinct and complex, best described as rich and sweet but possessing that tangy heritage taste common in many black varieties. Some folks even suggest it has a uniquely sweet and smokey flavour. Plants are indeterminate, regular leaf, growing 5 to 6 feet under ideal conditions. This is a very hardy variety, well suited to Canadian latitudes. Our trials were very positive overall during both the 2025 drought and the wet and cool end of the 2026 growing season. Maturity is around 75 days from transplant. Tends to produce quite well into the cool late season even in wet conditions with minor cracking on shoulders. Well adapted to maritime conditions!
