Meadow Arnica (Arnica chamissonis) - Meadow Arnica, also known as Mountain Daisy, is a native perennial herb found in meadows across North America, from the Pacific Northwest and Canadian prairies to the western and coastal regions of the USA. Traditionally, Arnica has been used for its medicinal properties, particularly in relieving tendonitis, arthritis, and general body pain. Topical creams made from the flowers are common, while internal use is strongly discouraged due to the toxic compound helenalin. Perhaps this explains why deer generally avoid the plant. Hardy to zone 2, Meadow Arnica reaches up to 20 inches tall, producing cheerful golden-yellow flowers from early June through late September. It thrives in full sun and a variety of soil types, is drought-tolerant, and attracts a wide range of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Arnica is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a native, non-invasive alternative to ornamental daisies.

Growing Instructions: Meadow Arnica can be slow and tricky to germinate, requiring light for proper sprouting. Seeds can be sown directly outdoors in late summer or early fall. Scatter seeds over a prepared soil bed, cover lightly, and keep moist (but not waterlogged). For indoor propagation, start seeds 8 weeks before the last frost. Sow 2–3 seeds per cell, lightly cover with growing medium, and place under full light. Maintain soil surface moisture using a spray bottle. Expect germination in approximately 20–26 days. Once seedlings are established, transplant to full sun or partial shade, spacing according to mature plant size.
