Baba's Hollywood Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) Katie Sobkowich (Hollywood Baba) grew one of the most magnificent stands of California poppies on the North West side of her Manitoba farmhouse, (Zone 3a) flanking both sides of the sidewalk to the front porch. Her daughter Elsie saved and regrew seeds from this golden stand and passed her source along to me. We are pleased to offer this unique lineage along to our customers. The picture is taken sometime in the late 1970's before the blue siding of the house was repainted a maroon red. Eschscholzia californica is named after the German botanist Johann Friedrich von Eschscholtz. California poppies are actually a wildflower native to California, where it is the state flower. These poppies thrive in arid regions, making it a very good choice for xeriscaping. This plant can naturalize under ideal locations but is not considered invasive.
